Wazhma and Arzoo, (The Azeemi sisters) are the designers and founders of Azeemi, a high fashion brand of clothing and handbags. Their distinctive Azeemi logo, seen on many of their handbags, has been inspired by whirling dervishes (the mystical SUFI dancers). They draw inspiration for their designs from their traditional Afghan background and add in a unique, modern twist. Their products are made by using the highest quality materials. Each piece is handpicked and made carefully with an eye for the fashion conscious buyer. Their designs are elegant and sophisticated; they make only a few pieces of each design to create a uniqueness within the brand. As a fashion brand, Azeemi is best known for combining contemporary silhouettes with the traditional techniques of old. The brand’s inspiration is distinctly Eastern peppered with Western influences.
Q. What first drew you to the fashion industry? Tell us how you got started, and how your career/personal paths lead you to where you are today?
A. We were both drawn to designing from a very young age. As we grew older, it became very clear to us that this is the path we both wanted to take. We have a story to tell, not just any story, but a fashionable one that has never been told before. We have a unique, but fashion forward taste and it would be unfair to not share that with anyone.
Q. Can you describe the personality behind your designs? What makes them unique and different?
A. We focus on dressing the modern, classy, sophisticated, bold, fashion-forward girl. That’s who we envision when designing each piece. Our fabric choice and clever ethnic detail is a key step to our designing process.
Q. What has been the biggest struggle for you in building your fashion career?
A. We never wanted to compromise the quality our product. Finding the highest quality fabric for our dresses and real leather for our purses was the biggest struggle, but we overcame it by traveling to different countries that specialize in the materials we needed. This allows us to provide the high quality we promise. Also, reaching our intended demographic, the fashion-forward, modern, sophisticated woman, has been difficult as well.
Q. Where do you find inspiration for your designs? Who or what has had the biggest influence on you as a designer?
A. The inspiration behind our collection is the spiritual beauty of the East, celebrating our affluent time honored heritage with an emphasis on the use of cuts, both ageless and contemporary, to craft a look that is elegantly classic. We get the inspiration for our designs from our traditional Afghan background to which we add a unique modern twist.
Q. Tell us a little about your design process. How do you approach creating a new line or fashion piece?
A. The design process is the most interesting and exciting part for us. We start by sketching our ideas, then we choose the fabric and then we begin sewing and constructing it. Every garment has its own process before it reaches the final stages. All I can say is, each dress takes countless hours of work and the end result tells the unique story of it’s creation.
Q. What advice would you give to other designers who are looking to break into the industry?
A. Practice your craft, educate yourself about the process, and don’t let anyone stop you from your creativity. If you have a dream, you gotta protect it.
Q. Anything else you would like to talk about or share?
